Overview
When VOB responses show active coverage but return empty financial fields (deductible, out-of-pocket, coinsurance), this typically indicates clearinghouse data limitations rather than configuration issues.
When This Occurs
You may encounter empty financial fields when:
Coverage Status: Shows as "Active" for both In Network and Out of Network
Missing Fields: Individual Deductible (IND DED), Deductible Met (DED MET), Individual Out-of-Pocket (IND OOP), OOP Met (OOP MET), and Coinsurance return blank
Standard Fields Configured: Insurance Provider (picklist), Member ID, and Payer Code are properly set up
Root Cause: Clearinghouse Data Limitations
Empty financial fields typically occur due to clearinghouse data limitations, not configuration problems. This happens when:
Payer Response Limitations: The insurance payer confirms coverage electronically but does not return detailed benefit breakdown information
Selective Data Sharing: Some payers provide basic eligibility confirmation while withholding specific financial details like deductibles and accumulator information
Third-Party Administrator Issues: Coverage managed by third-party administrators or carved-out benefits may not include comprehensive financial data in electronic responses
What This Means for Your VOB
When standard VOB fields are properly configured but financial details remain empty:
Coverage Confirmation: The patient's insurance is active and valid
Limited Financial Data: Specific benefit details are not available electronically from this payer
Not a Configuration Issue: The problem is not related to field mapping or system setup
Next Steps
When you encounter this situation:
Verify Field Configuration: Confirm that Insurance Provider is set as a picklist field (not custom text), Member ID is populated, and Payer Code is visible
Contact Development: If standard fields are properly configured, submit a support ticket for backend analysis
Development Review: Our technical team can determine whether financial details are being returned differently by the clearinghouse or if they're simply not provided by the payer
โ ๏ธ Note: This type of clearinghouse data investigation requires technical review beyond standard field configuration troubleshooting.
