Troubleshooting Reference Fields Causing Required Validation in Quick Create

This guide helps you resolve issues when reference fields are incorrectly marked as required during Quick Create, even though they are not set as required in your module layouts.

Symptom / Error

When using Quick Create to save records (such as Tasks), reference fields appear as required and block the save process. This occurs even when these fields are not configured as required in the module layout settings.

Users may see validation errors preventing them from completing Quick Create workflows.


Cause

Reference fields are treated differently in Quick Create compared to the full form. Quick Create does not fully support resolving reference field relationships the same way the standard form does.

The system enforces reference fields as required at save time because it expects related record data to be populated, regardless of the field's required setting in the layout.

Solution

There are two recommended approaches to resolve this issue:

Option 1: Remove Reference Fields from Quick Create Layout

  1. Navigate to your module's layout settings

  2. Edit the Quick Create layout

  3. Remove the problematic reference fields from the Quick Create view

  4. Save the layout changes

This allows users to complete Quick Create workflows without being blocked by reference field validation.

Option 2: Convert Reference Fields to Text Fields

  1. Navigate to your module's field settings

  2. Locate the reference fields causing issues

  3. Convert them from reference fields to text fields

  4. Update the Quick Create layout to include the converted text fields

  5. Test the Quick Create functionality

💡 Tip: Text fields do not trigger the same validation behavior and will work properly in Quick Create layouts.

Verification / Expected Result

After implementing either solution:

  • Users can successfully save records via Quick Create without validation errors

  • Reference field validation no longer blocks the Quick Create workflow

  • The Quick Create process completes normally
