How to Link Referral Contacts to Multiple Referral Sources Using Related Module Fields

You can associate one referral contact with multiple referral sources by using a related module field approach. This overcomes the standard one-to-one relationship limitation and allows you to reuse contact information without duplicating data entry.

Before You Begin

  • Module Access: Ensure you have access to the Referral Sources module.

  • Permissions: Verify you have administrative permissions to create and modify related module fields.

  • Data Prep: Have your referral contact information ready to input.

Steps

  1. Navigate to Referral Contacts: Go to the Referral Sources module and access the Referral Contacts section.

Selecting Anna Smith as an example

  2. Add a Related Module Field: When creating or editing a referral contact, add a related module field that connects to the Referral Sources module.

  3. Link Multiple Sources: Use the related module field to tag the same contact to multiple referral sources. This creates the many-to-many relationship that allows one contact to be associated with several sources.

  4. Save Your Changes: Once you've linked the contact to all desired referral sources, save the record.

Verification / Expected Result

  • The referral contact should now appear as related to all the referral sources you connected them to

  • When you select this referral contact on a Lead, Account, or Opportunity, the system will show a modal asking you to choose which specific referral source to associate with that record

  • This selection modal gives you flexibility while keeping everything organized

πŸ’‘ How the Selection Process Works

When you're working with Leads, Accounts, or Opportunities and select a referral contact that's linked to multiple sources:

  1. The system automatically detects the contact has multiple referral source associations

  2. A modal window appears showing all available referral sources for that contact

  3. You select which specific referral source should be credited for this particular lead or opportunity

  4. The system saves your selection and properly attributes the referral

βœ… Benefits of This Approach

  • Eliminates duplicate data entry: No need to re-enter the same contact information multiple times

  • Maintains data integrity: One contact record with multiple relationships

  • Flexible attribution: Choose the appropriate referral source for each specific lead or opportunity

  • Better reporting: Accurate tracking of referral effectiveness across multiple sources
